Most of the time, the realities of winter can be daydreamed away with thoughts of sunning on the beach and picnicking in the park. However, one reality we take seriously all year round here at Mane ‘n Tail, is the health and beauty of your hair. Winter can do a number on even the most well-maintained hair. By using a combination of effective products, simple small changes, and a positive attitude, tackling the challenges of winter has never been easier.

Here are three basic steps, with some tips for each, to ensure your hair stays it’s best.

1) DON’T wait until it’s too late before you see adverse effects. DO combat the struggles of winter before there are issues.

By tackling any problems before they happen, you can help minimize winter damage. Dryness is the main factor behind brittle, flat, and lackluster locks. By using a deep conditioner, like Mane ‘n Tail Deep Moisturizing Conditioner, a few times a week, you’ll help your mane keep its inner structure intact. This will also protect your scalp from dryness and flaking.  Another quick home treatment is Mane ‘n Tail Hair Strengthener…great as a leave-on spray conditioner when your hair is feeling extra parched.

Also, the heat in your home can dry out the air, making you and your hair less than 100%. By using a humidifier, you help replace some of that moisture that your hair is thirsty for.

Lastly, by getting regular trims, you’ll assure that any split ends are quickly taken care of before the problem can travel farther up the hair shaft. Be sure to also shop Mane ‘n Tail products to keep your hair healthy!

2) DON’T go outside with wet hair. DO make sure your hair is dry and ready to go.

Even slightly damp hair can freeze and cause some serious damage. If ice can cause potholes in asphalt, think of what it can do to your hair. Eep!

Although it’s tempting to use a blowdryer and other hot tools, use them sparingly, and use ones that are ceramic, tourmaline, or titanium. They’re designed for the best in durability, heat control, and moisture retention.

If you have naturally curly hair and need it dried quickly, try using an anti-frizz treatment along with a diffuser attachment with your blow dryer can do wonders. It’s a similar effect to air drying with a lot less time.

3) DON’T let your hair whip around wild in the cold wind. DO cover up your locks with a hat or scarf.

The wind can be a killer to your hair’s strength and shine. By wearing a hat, or simply keeping your hair in a scarf, you’ll keep your hair from blowing around and causing unnecessary damage.

If a hat isn’t your thing, now’s the time to try out some fun new updos to keep your hair from blowing all over the place. By incorporating a variety of simple techniques that, with a little practice, will help maintain your look, even on the breeziest of days.

By applying as many of these methods as possible, you and your hair will survive these next few months, and come out of it looking fresh and fierce, ready for that spring wardrobe!
