According to Julie Oh, a Geneticist from Stanford University, we get our hair color from special pigments called melanins. “You can think of these pigments as dyes that color our hair,” she writes. “There are many genes that determine how much of each pigment our cells make.” And some genes are are recessive, meaning they can easily get “overridden” by a dominant gene. For example, if your mother is blonde, but your father has black hair, you probably have dark hair like your father. What do you have in your bathroom storage closet?
I recently did some spring cleaning and found some forgotten about – but had to buy and try – hair accessories. I pulled out at least 3 different size barrels of curling irons, hot curlers, those bendy curlers, and a crimper. ACK! Did I really crimp my hair?

I wish I knew then what I know now and I would have saved some money. Thanks to social media, like blogs and Pinterest, I came across this easy wave technique and had to try it. I would love to achieve the beautiful looking waves seen on Taylor Swift. Her wavy locks seem to be her favorite look.

The power of braids
Yes, I’m one of those people who braided my wet hair, slept that way, just to get the look of the waves in my dry hair after taking them out in the morning. Let’s face it, that’s sometimes uncomfortable, not to mention increases split ends and breakage. Here’s a quick way to add waves, some texture, and body to your hair.

You’ll need a hair straightener (look in your bathroom storage closet). On your dry hair, divide it into hair into two sections or more depending on the amount of wave you want and time you have. Braid each section.

Take one braid and twist it. While holding the twist, put the hot straightener around the twisted braid and twist the straightener in the same direction as your twisted hair. Repeat this with the other braided section.

Take out the braid when the hair is cool. Run your fingers through your hair to separate the braid and see the resulting waves.

This “easy waves” technique really enhances and showcases any natural wave your hair may have.

Bonus tip

Chalk. It’s not just for blackboards anymore! Hair chalking is an easy way to get cool tie-dyed tips — without any serious commitment! But read through this post before you decide.

Hair chalking has been around for a little while now and it’s an easy way to temporarily add color to your locks. If you haven’t heard of hair chalking, here’s the basics: you wet your strands, furiously rub chalk all over them and then heat style to lock in the color. It’s down and dirty and probably doesn’t smell awesome but it looks pretty cool. Best part, it is sensible because it washes out.

Seventeen Magazine has a great how-to step-by-step guide here. The nice part is this is all you need:
- Soft pastel chalk. You can pick up a giant set up from a local craft store for about $5!
- A small spray bottle filled with water
- A flat iron or curling iron
- Rubber gloves
- A old towel or t-shirt you don’t mind getting color on.

The color stayed in editor of Seventeen Magazine’s hair (which is naturally medium blonde) for about a week, while her friend (who bleaches her hair) washed out the next day. The best part about this technique is that it works for girls with darker hair too, although the color is much more subtle. It’s great style to try for prom!

As I was researching the best way to chalk my hair, I saw these great tips from The Beauty Department:
- Twist the hair as you chalk. The texture from twisting makes the chalk release more pigment.
- Always brush the excess powder out after chalking each piece.
- If you’re blonde or you have blonde tips, DO NOT wet your hair before chalking. It will stain if you do because adding water to pure pigment creates a real dye!
- If your hair color is anything darker than blonde and you don’t have blonde tips, you’ll NEED the water.

Minimize breakage.
Make sure that your hair is thoroughly wet before applying shampoo. Use no more than a quarter-size dollop, and rub the shampoo between your palms first. Lather for no more than 30 seconds.

Save time and heat.
Towel-dry your hair thoroughly before using a blow dryer. You’ll save time and avoid damaging your hair with too much heat.

Know when to use a comb.
Avoid using a brush on wet hair because it is subject to breakage. Comb out snarls.

Remove static, control flyaway ends.
Use pomade sparingly and add a glossy sheen to either straight or curly hair. Apply a very small amount to one hand, and liquefy it between your palms. Then run your hands through the hair. If braiding, apply before braiding and use it for small touch-ups.

Eat healthy.
Dull, lifeless hair can be a sign of a poor diet. Try cutting down on cholesterol and fats.

Dampen your brush.
To cut down on static electricity, dampen your hairbrush before brushing.

Braids. Use Braid Sheen Spray after a braid is finished to smooth down loose or uncontrolled hairs. Apply it to your fingertip or to the end of a hairpin, directing it on top of the stray hairs to encourage them back into the braided pattern.

Don’t stress out!
Use a coated rubber band or a soft hair tie to secure ponytails and the ends of a braid to reduce the stress on the hair.

Wondering why this blog has been so quiet? I took a vacation last week from the winter of the North to the warmer weather of the South.

Coming from a colder climate to the warm climate of Florida (Pine Island to be exact) really had an effect on my hair! First of all, it was stressing out because of the change from cold to hot. Not to mention that the ocean’s salt content did not play will with my hair at all! The salt water removes excessive amounts of natural moisture which means I will see split ends faster, as well as hair color loss.

We took a wonderful boat trip in Pine Island Sound to Cabbage Key and the and then to the beach at Cayo Costa State Park. While I protected by skin with large amounts of sun screen, I did not think about sun damage to my hair. The UV rays the sun produces dries out the hair. The salt content from my sweat didn’t help either, which raises the PH factor for the hair.
